Understanding cat shedding can help pet lovers and your team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caringpawsanimalhospital.com\/\">Caring Paws Animal Hospital<\/a> take better care of your kitty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Normal Cat Shedding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Normal hair growth for cats is cyclical. Long or short, cats lose hair all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hair growth cycle that includes four stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anagen (new hair growing actively)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catagen (when a new hair reaches its maximum length)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telogen (hair at rest not actively growing)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exogen (hair sheds at the end of its lifecycle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A new hair will then begin to grow from the follicle after the exogen phase, and the cycle continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any given time, a cat\u2019s coat contains hairs in all four stages. There are times, though, where more of the hairs are in the exogen phase, which results in shedding. Pets who are mostly indoors tend to have less shedding in spurts, and instead shed more consistently throughout the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Cat\u2019s Coat as a Reflection of Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A healthy cat\u2019s coat will be sleek and shiny, without matting or dull patches. Areas of hair loss or shorter hairs can indicate a problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reasons for a less-than-optimal coat include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nutrition: <\/strong>A cat who is not receiving the appropriate nutrients often has an unthrifty haircoat. A quality commercial diet balanced by a veterinary nutritionist is optimal. Diagnoses such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, auto-immune disease, and stress can all lead to hair loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neoplasia: <\/strong>Cancer can affect the growth of hair as well as overall skin health, and lead to hair loss and increased shedding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allergic disease: <\/strong>Environmental allergens, contact sensitivities, and food allergies can lead to hair loss and abnormal hair growth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caringpawsanimalhospital.com\/about\/\">Letting us know<\/a> if your cat\u2019s coat quality, shedding cycle, or grooming habits have changed can tip us off to trouble and allow us to intervene sooner and more successfully.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coping With Cat Shedding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pets tend to shed more in the spring and the fall.
